Welcome to Hope Presbyterian Church!

We encourage parents to worship together with their children, as they too are members of God’s covenant family. We ask the rest of Hope family to be patient and “let the little children come” to Jesus (Mt. 19:14).

sermon notes

Because Christ died for us while we were still sinners, we can rejoice in our sufferings and in God.

I. A New Way to Suffer

II. A New Kind of Love

III. The Ultimate Joy

Reflection GROUPS - 12:15PM

Reflection Questions (Applying the Gospel to Our Lives):

1. How do you usually respond to suffering? Does suffering tend to lead you closer to God, or further away from God?

2. What does it personally mean to you that "while we were still sinners, Christ died for us"?

3. How could God's gracious love for you in Jesus motivate you to love others who do not always love you back?

4. Where, other than God, do you find yourself looking for joy?  What do you think it would look like to know and experience your ultimate joy in God himself?

5. Pray together for the Holy Spirit to pour out God's love for you in Jesus Christ into your hearts, so that you can rejoice in your sufferings and in God.

Response Song

 Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing

1 Come, thou fount of ev'ry blessing,
tune my heart to sing thy grace;
streams of mercy, never ceasing,
call for songs of loudest praise.
Teach me some melodious sonnet,
sung by flaming tongues above;
praise the mount! I'm fixed upon it,
mount of God's unchanging love.

 2 Here I raise my Ebenezer;
hither by thy help I'm come;
and I hope, by thy good pleasure,
safely to arrive at home.
Jesus sought me when a stranger,
wand'ring from the fold of God:
he, to rescue me from danger,
interposed his precious blood.

 3 O to grace how great a debtor
daily I'm constrained to be;
let that grace now, like a fetter,
bind my wand'ring heart to thee.
Prone to wander – Lord, I feel it –
prone to leave the God I love;
here's my heart, O take and seal it,
seal it for thy courts above.
